Social and Environmental Responsibility

Castello Banfi Social Responsibility

A family-owned vineyard estate in Tuscany’s Montalcino region, Castello Banfi’s dedication to excellence captures honor after prestigious honor.  Our 7,100 acre estate is a constellation of single vineyards where noble grape varieties are interwoven with optimal terroir. As the first producer in Italy to pioneer research on select Sangiovese clones and to register the results so that our neighbors could share our dedication to a finer wine world, Castello Banfi inspired a winemaking renaissance.

Castello Banfi selectively harvests grapes by hand then sorts them by individual berry at the winery. We developed and patented hybrid fermentation tanks to combine the ideal features of stainless steel with fine oak, and customized aging barrels to our own balanced size and toasting specifications. Inert nitrogen bottling helps keep our wines low in natural sulfites and histamines. Our restored medieval castle is a beacon for regional hospitality with its enoteca, two restaurants, luxury rooms and suites, and museum dedicated to ancient glass, Etruscan pottery and the skeleton of a 5 million year old whale fossil unearthed on our estate.

Low Input & Eco-Balanced Farming

Over the last 13 years, Castello Banfi has participated in low input cultivation by carefully monitoring fertilization and agrochemical treatments, considerably reducing the quantities applied, and focusing on low-persistence ingredients that are gentle to the environment.

Reducing the Greenhouse Effect

Castello Banfi has one of the highest ratios of forest to cultivated land among European wine estates.  We plant local species particularly adapted to the environment, constantly cultivate our forests and scrub to clear fire lanes, and maintain small water basins to fight forest fires and provide drinking water for wildlife. Over the past 25 years, Castello Banfi has planted enough cypress trees to shade the 50-mile route between Siena and Florence!

M
aintaining Biodiversity

Natural meadows bordered by typical Mediterranean bush provide ample grazing for the rich and varied wild fauna, particularly boar, pheasants and deer. We are raising a small herd of Amiata donkeys, a particular local breed that risked extinction, and also dedicate part of our estate to groves of prune and olives, fields of wheat and forests of truffle-rooted oaks.

E
rosion Control

Castello Banfi is strongly committed to containing soil erosion, having constructed 90 miles of water drainage ditches, 42 miles of underground drainage systems, and 6 miles of stone walls and embankments. We regularly practice vineyard turfing, planting between the rows with epecially designed seed drilling machines.

Water Conservation

Over the years, the estate has shifted from traditional sprinkling to drip-irrigation, reducing water use by almost 80%. We collect rainwater in two natural reservoirs and carefully manage water resources including the Orcia and Ombrone rivers, our natural borders to the south and west.

Certification from Vineyard to Bottle

Results of the research and development of the estate are verified, communicated and shared both internally and with the greater community. Castello Banfi is the first winery in the world to be awarded international recognition for exceptional environmental, ethical and social responsibility (ISO 14001 and SA8000) as well as an international leader in customer satisfaction (ISO 9001:2000). Banfi affirms the idea that not only individuals, but the business itself, must support ethical values as part of the definition of its responsible behavior.
